Jonathan Cooke - Spoletta

Jonathan Cooke is a versatile tenor, equally comfortable on the operatic stage, concert platform, and choral circuit.

He graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in 2015 with a Master of Music degree. Prin-cipal roles whilst studying include Ruggero in Puccini's La Rondine (RCS), Tamino in the Young Opera Venture's touring production of The Magic Flute and Le Mari in Poulenc's surreal one-act opera Les Mam-elles de Tiresias (RCS).

Since moving to London, Jonathan’s operatic roles have been many and varied, though recently he has been focussing on the larger lyric roles, including Don Jose Carmen (Various companies), Hoffmann The Tales of Hoffmann (Kentish Opera), Pinkerton Madame Butterfly (Opera Up Close), Cavaradossi Tosca (Various companies), and Rodolfo La Boheme (cover, Mid Wales Opera)

Concert highlights include Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Elgar The Kingdom, Verdi Requiem, Rossini Petite Messe Solenelle and Handel Messiah.

Jonathan has enjoyed a life-longstanding association with the St Endellion Music Festival. Whilst growing up he sang in the chorus, making his way down through the voice parts! He now enjoys cameo appearances in many of the Festival’s concerts and opera performances.

In addition to his performing career, Jonathan also teaches and coaches singing, with former students achieving Grade 8 and entrance to music colleges. He is especially interested in the coaching English, and during lockdown he completed a TEFL course to support this part of his coaching.

Jonathan and his wife (also a professional singer) welcomed a baby girl into the fold in 2022, and are both still getting to grips with balancing their careers alongside full-time parenting. This notwithstanding, Jona-than has performed the roles of Beadle Bamford Sweeney Todd (West Green House Opera), and Gastone La Traviata (St Endellion Summer Festival), he is also helping to develop roles in Gaṅgā, an exciting new opera by Jataneel Banerjee based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Recent and future engagements include Jonathan’s debut at the Royal Opera House in the Geisterchor der Fliegende Holländer, Dr. Caius Falstaff at West Green House Opera, and Steuermann der Fliegende Hol-länder at St Endellion Summer Music Festival.

When not singing, Jonathan enjoys playing and watching football. He is a proud long-serving member of Weavers Field Wanderers, a very amateur football team established in 2016 with a core of professional sing-ers. He is a huge fan of Liverpool, which is a bittersweet experience at the moment!

Tosca is the opera that Jonathan has performed more than any other – as a treble he sang in the chorus of choristers and as the Shepherd Boy, as a tenor he has performed both Cavaradossi and Spoletta as well as in the chorus at Scottish Opera and Grange Park.

Having a conservative estimate of 75 performances under his belt, he is delighted to be involved in a com-pletely fresh take on the opera. He is also contemplating touring his own one-man performance of the piece, as soon as he can nail Vissi d’Arte.
